About 10,000 Words #0, 56p, half-size, $2 or
trade
This fat literature & arts zine is full of short stories, poetry, comics,
and various reviews. Most of the stories are fantasy or sci-fi related, but
interesting enough to grab the attention of those who may not be genre fans.
Reviews of video games and a few zines also included.

Been Meaning to Keep a Journal, 24 pages, quarter-size
Half of this zine is a travelogue about a trip to Italy, while the rest deals
with Dallas' parents, and a visit to Manhattan for New Years. Dallas' honest
voice radiates through most of the writing, and his tone is conversational
and rough, yet wry and intelligent. A very good read.

Child That Mind #1, 38p, odd size (7.5"X4")
A well-written hournal-styled per-zine of mostly text, interspersed with a
few images. It's msotly about place, the focuses being Sydney, Australia and
Auckland, New Zealand, as well as personal issues the author is dealing with.
It is a poetic and intimate work, much recommended.

Dismembered #6, Nov.-Dec.'02, 32p, quarter-size
A primarily per-zine with a few political rants and a smidgen of poetry and
prose. A lot of the text is hand-written, but it's nice and clear. I especially
like the integration of the text with the imagery.

Efficiency #8, 14p, half-size
An interesting combination of the personal and compilation zines, with different
writers filling columns with personal journals, political rants, and other
random bits. The lack of imagery may bother some, but it leaves more room
for quality writing inside.

Endpapers #1, "A Steel Man," 10p,
half-size
Brilliant comic zine in bold and graphic cut-up style with a mix of found
imagery and flat shapes. The story can be read as an allegory for the Industrial
Revolution as a giant steel man eats up the countryside. Very impressive for
a first issue. Highly recommended!

Flying Haystacks #3, 30p, odd size (8.5"X7"),
$3
With amazing artwork that is a combination of magazine clippings, xeroxes,
drawings, and paintings collaged together, this zine needs little else to
draw attention to it. The fact that it is in full color certainly helps. It
feels like flipping through someone's sketchbook of source material. Amazing.

She Made This #1, 6p, full size
This is a resource for DIY women. Included in this issue are plenty of ads
for DIY clothing lines, zine info, an introduction to interning/volunteering,
designing your space on a budget, and how to start a ladyfest. Very informative
and fun!

Silence Is Death #1, 14p, half-size
In a beautifully honest manner, Amanda writes an amazing and thought-provoking
per-zine with social and political elements woven throughout. The incorporation
of quotes works well with the subject matter and the imagery as well. She
discusses living in the city and her distaste with the apathy of the world.
Strong stuff.

So This Is It? #1, 22p, quarter-size
This is a cute per-zine in a journal format. Basically, it's just about high
school and being young. Some of the hand-written bits are hard to decipher,
but mostly it's not a problem.

The Unknown Writer, #1, Vol.6, Spring 2002,
40 pages, half-size
A nice little self-published literary journal. I was most impressed by the
fiction work of Judd Hampton, but I think many readers will find other quality
pieces within. Good poetry and good fiction. I wish there was a little more
art included. Otherwise, nice stuff.

Waste Lands, "The Idiot Matrix,"
42p, half-size
Great comic from Ted Seko. I mean, this stuff is really good, good enough
to be published on a larger scale I think. The bold, black and white brush
and pen work is expressive and eye-catching. The compositions are exciting
and dynamic, with great use of black. The story is humorous, almost allegorical
and very surreal. The fact that the main character is a super-strong talking
infant is enough to be surprised and amazed. If you like comics of quality,
you'll like this.
